چکیده

In recent years pneumoconiosis among miners has increasingly attracted the attention of students of respiratory disease, and the urgent problem which it now presents in the South Wales coalfields, together with the importance of the industry involved, has produced a considerable literature dealing with pneumoconiosis and the environmental considerations relative to it. It is thought that the practice of tin mining may be less well known to workers in this field, and it is the purpose of this communication to outline the processes involved, especially as they bear upon the production of silicosis, and to review briefly the features of this " classical " silicosis.

Risk of silicosis in cohorts of Chinese tin and tungsten miners, and pottery workers (I): an epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND Epidemiological evaluations of the risk of silicosis in relation to exposure to crystalline silica have raised the question of whether different types of silica dust exposures vary with respect to their ability to cause silicosis. The aim of this study is to compare the risk of silicosis among cohorts of silica dust-exposed Chinese tin miners, tungsten miners, and pottery workers and...

Exposure to silica and silicosis among tin miners in China: exposure-response analyses and risk assessment.

OBJECTIVES To investigate the risk of silicosis among tin miners and to investigate the relation between silicosis and cumulative exposure to dust (Chinese total dust and respirable crystalline silica dust). METHODS A cohort study of 3010 miners exposed to silica dust and employed for at least 1 year during 1960-5 in any of four Chinese tin mines was conducted. Historical total dust data from...

An 11-year-old boy with silico-tuberculosis attributable to secondary exposure to sandstone mining in central India.

Silicosis from secondary exposure is not often reported. This is the first such report of a child with possible silicosis attributable to secondary exposure to sandstone mining in India. Silicosis from secondary exposure has been reported in the gem polishing and slate pencil manufacturing industries in India; however, the stone-mining industry is severely under-researched. No preventive measur...

Silicosis in West Country Granite Workers.

The granite industry in Cornwall and Devon is briefly described, especially the production of dust in dressing the stone. In 1951, 210 granite masons were examined (about 84% of the total at that time) and 37 (17 6%) showed silicosis. These men were followed up for 10 years. No silicosis was seen in men with less than 15 years' exposure, but after this time the risk increased to 11 out of 14 in...

Occupational respiratory diseases in the South African mining industry

BACKGROUND Crystalline silica and asbestos are common minerals that occur throughout South Africa, exposure to either causes respiratory disease. Most studies on silicosis in South Africa have been cross-sectional and long-term trends have not been reported. Although much research has been conducted on the health effects of silica dust and asbestos fibre in the gold-mining and asbestos-mining s...
